Wedding Wednesdays: Style Inspiration

Excuse my missed post last week. It seems the last week of my 20s required a couple days spent in bed with the flu. Now that I'm all better, a week into my 30s and a few pounds lighter, I'm back to tackle this week's Wedding Wednesdays. Today's topic is style inspiration. People would often ask me what the theme of the wedding was. I had to laugh because it sounded like I was planning a prom, where there would be columns made of poster-board sized playing cards and oversized cardboard dice in every corner.

At first, I called it a Winter Wonderland. But the only Wintery decor was the bag of pine cones I had in mind for the centerpieces. When I opened my June issue of Martha Stewart and saw the above page of nail polishes, I said, "this is it, this is the color palette!" You can imagine the looks I got from basing our colors on nail polishes in a magazine. However, Mike was on board (if we replaced a shade with grey and added a 'greenish'), so neutrals were a go.

From then on out, I started pinning photos on Pinterest like a mad woman. I wanted mix-matched centerpieces. I wanted wood slabs.  I wanted candles, jars, bottles and vases. Short flowers, tall flowers - all felt flowers, with perhaps pink carnations and air plants. I wanted milk glass and vintage findings. I loved the dramatic garlands and swags with the overstated blooms. I have to admit, I keep saying "I", but in reality every image had to pass the groom-to-be (GTB) test ... and there were several ideas that were nixed!

Since the reception hall needed a little help, we wanted to really Wow guests when they walked in with a unique setup. I couldn't let go of the above image, until we realized we just had too many guests attending. We also liked the idea of doing a more simple alter backdrop, and let the flowers - and us - shine.

I started to get really overwhelmed with all the potential ideas. Are there too many directions? Is it too whimsical for a house full of antiques? Where are we going to get all these decorations and how are we going to make it look like these amazing photos. I quickly learned that Pinterest was my friend and worst enemy throughout this planning process. So many of these images are lifted straight from magazine shoots and probably not a reality, for even the most seasoned wedding planner. After gathering all of these images, I had to take a step back and figure out what was completely necessary and actually doable ... which I was still doing three weeks before the wedding!

Flora

While meandering around Asheville, we stumbled upon Flora. It reminds me a lot of Studio Posy, here in Norfolk, but a bit bigger. The Asheville shop is a full service florist that does weddings and everyday bouquets, but also offers gifts, such as jewelry, cards and decor.

The shop is just gorgeous! I love the clean and simple, yet rustic feel of the space. There is a lot of stuff to look at, but it doesn't feel cluttered at all. All the furniture seems antique or vintage, but since it has all be painted white and weathered it matches so well. Not to mention the great use of chalkboards (and painted drawers and doors to make chalkboards) within some of the display pieces.

I was immediately texting Glass Gardens with lots of ideas for new creations, including these cutie egg succulents. Haven't heard the verdict if it's worth all the trouble of carefully breaking eggs to create the "pot", or what you do with the leftover eggs...?

I love this idea of "Build A Bouquet"! I think it would be a fun addition to my felt flowers for a craft show, pop-up or even an idea for a class. I didn't find out if those prices are per stem...if so that's a pretty expensive bouquet - but great for sales :). If you're in the Asheville area, be sure to check out this gem. It's on your way to the Riverwalk Arts District, so you can't miss it!

#52: Freebie - Hump Day Happiness

A few inspirational websites to get you through this hot August Wednesday. Only two more days until the weekend!

Brian Nelson is a graphic designer in the Atlanta, Georgia area. Along with being a fantastic designer, he also pulls together some quite lovely blog posts to look at.

Paul Foreman is the Mind Mapping guru behind this website and blog. I’ve never tried mind mapping, but this site has definitely inspired me to.

Although the website doesn’t scream it, Handmade Maps, a London-based company, is chalk-full of extraordinary maps that will keep you busy for hours. A must-stop if you’re maps, or anything pretty.

Hey Studio is a brilliant design group based in Barcelona, Spain. I actually found them from one of Brian Nelson's roundups, but I couldn't bare to keep their amazing work all to myself. Definitely don't miss this.

I'm tackling the second annual 92 Days of Summer list.

Digital Inspiration Board

Since I'm home an unable to post my typical monthly inspiration board, I  decided to make a digital board of small home offices...in hopes of finishing up the organization and redesigning of my office/kitchen.

(click for original web site) Pinterest, Apartment Therapy, Better Homes and Gardens, Health and the BLT Boys

I can't get enough of these closet offices! The teal office is a little a little much, but it makes great use of the small space. I love the forest wallpaper from BH&G, although I would need a bit more storage space than three shelves. The BLT Boys storage would be perfect, but just a tad more desk space would be ideal.

The Wren Design

Decorating clipboards with contact paper, maybe the new inspiration board? The bright orange lamp is also delightful.

Apartment Therapy, Better Homes and Gardens

I really like the idea of working from a high chair, it gives you plenty of "under the desk" storage or making use of a bookshelf for legs of the desk. Both offer tons of light (not an option in my office space) and nice storage.

The Inspired Room

The walls around my grandpa's workbench were covered in pegboard and I thought it was always a little ugly...but throw some paint on it and lots of pegs for crafting goodies and it's artwork in itself. The board is inexpensive and pretty lightweight, so it won't be nuisance to buy or hang.

Shades of Light
I think I'll dye my old Ikea rug instead of buying new, the yellow color is amazing! Stay tuned for photos of the updated office later this month!

DIY Baby Shower Invites

The invites were so simple and could be used for any event. I had coupons for both the envelopes and cardstock so the invites, direction cards and menu cards cost about $6 to make (made a total of 14 each).

What you need:
6"x6" cardstock pad - 24 sheets (with patterns on the back and front)
photo paper, various card stock
glue stick
envelopes

What you do (invites):
1. Cut the base of the invite to be 4.5"x6". Cut 1"x6" strips from the scraps. Coordinate your strips with your invite base so the colors pop against one another. Glue together.
2. I designed the center part of the invite with three different fonts, and colors I pulled from the cardstock. I printed them on photo paper and glue it to the cardstock. Slip inside the envelope with a direction card (if needed) and send away!

What you do (menu cards):
We decided to have a set menu for lunch to make it easier on the kitchen staff. We picked three lunch options. I used the design from the invite to create the menu. Printed it, glued it onto the random colored cardstock I already had. I added the color strips and circles to the cards to tie it all in.

April Inspiration

I cannot believe it's April already! I really want to savor every moment of April...we have a wedding to attend, pregnant lady photos to take, a trip to New Orleans, a baby shower and lots of crafting to do (as always). Here's my inspiration board I put together for this month, one of my favorites has to be the Newspaper clipping my mom sent from home, which says, "Argument over a pig ends in officer shooting self in foot."

Happy April!

March Inspiration and Goals

This month's inspiration comes from a variety of places: Martha Stewart, local art exhibit openings, Spain, W magazine, Phoenix and more. Oh, and the reason there is a big booty on the wall board this month is because it's inspiration for the ultimate beach body :)

As far as goals go this month, I'm aiming for three more-time consuming targets:
1) Do my taxes
2) Scan and organize my middle-school scrapbooks (I'm sick of lugging them around!)
3) Take my cooking class (thanks to Groupon) and make some of the meals at home

February Inspiration Board

I'm going to be updating my inspiration board monthly this year (last year I think I did it once) with magazine clippings, recipes, photos, local niceness and my monthly goals. For February I've included several recipes from Sunset Magazine, wanna make and wear outfits from an adorable catalogue called Boden and of course a beer label :) You can click on the photo to see exactly what everything is.

Most importantly, to me, are my monthly goals. It's a short list of five, but hopefully easy to accomplish. They are:
1) Exercise (Start and stay with it)
2) Send out handmade Valentines
3) Get outside and take more photos
4) Update my portfolio site
5) Watch my spending and save some money
